Jonny Lee Miller has revealed there's no rivalry between him and Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch.

And he explained: "[Cumberbatch] was excited for me and he was very encouraging and we discussed it."

Miller has said that he got his information from the books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, not from watching Steven Moffat's hit BBC drama, Entertainment Weekly reported.

The show will focus on fleshing out the relationship between Holmes and his father, rather than Holmes’ brother Mycroft who can be seen in the UK show.

And Doctor Watson will be played by a female this time - Kill Bill star Lucy Liu has signed up for the iconic role.

Moffat and Mark Gatiss' Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia last week scooped a nomination for Best TV Miniseries or Movie in the Primetime Emmy Awards and has already secured a place in viewers' hearts Stateside - is there room for one more drama centering on Holmes? Let us know below...

Martin Freeman has revealed starring as Bilbo Baggins in Lord Of The Rings prequel The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has been an "absolutely gargantuan" task.

Comparing his role in the blockbuster adaptation of the fantasy novel by by JRR Tolkien, due out 14 December, to that of his role as Doctor Watson in BBC hit drama Sherlock, he told Empire magazine: "Everything is bigger and takes more time. I mean, Sherlock is posh telly, but even Sherlock is fast compared to The Hobbit.”

empire

The September cover of Empire magazine features a world exclusive preview of The Hobbit, showing Freeman as Bilbo Baggins and Andy Serkis returning as Gollum.

Speaking about his co-star in the long-awaited prequel from Peter Jackson - esteemed director of the Lord of The Rings trilogy - Serkis said: "He's so mercurial in his performance. You just don’t know what you are going to get. Yet he’s brilliant at taking direction. There’s a rhythm that one works with Martin. He likes to try it his way and then you start saying, ‘What about this?’ When he gets it, it’s gold. And it’s so totally Bilbo.”

Sir Ian McKellen, who stars as Gandalf in the upcoming film, recently said it will blow viewers' minds.

He told Entertainment Weekly: "A lot of people weren't even born when we were filming Lord Of The Rings and only know the movies from watching them on DVD.

"They'll see Middle Earth on the big screen in The Hobbit, and I guarantee there will be a lot of minds blown wide apart."

Meanwhile, director Jackson said of the differences between characters in JRR Tolkien's original novels and in the films: "In the movie we want these characters to have storylines and a little more substance than they do in the book.

"Almost everything we're doing is from Tolkien somewhere, whether it's in the book or the subsequent development that wasn't published in The Hobbit itself."

The September issue of Empire is on sale now.

Channel 4 have unveiled their plans for a rather novel night of TV.

The broadcaster, known for taking risks, is set to hand over the creative reins to six world-class DJs, including Grandmaster Flash and Annie Mac, for a a six-hour live overnight house party.

A statement from Channel 4 reads:

With no advert breaks, no commentary and no interruptions, this all night takeover will see a line-up of top international DJs play live to the nation with six hour-long sets in a clubbing experience like no other - this is not a programme about clubbing; this is the club.

annie mac
Annie Mac is one of the DJs set to play during the programme.

Arts Commissioner Tabitha Jackson, said: "There are four things about this all-nighter that excite me. Firstly, almost every element is uncharted territory: from the visual artists having to transform our screens by responding live to the DJs; to the scale of the real time on-screen and online interactivity; to the DJs having to reach directly into our living rooms rather than playing to a venue. If we can pull it off, we will have created a pretty unique experience."

grandmaster flash
Grandmaster Flash will take to the decks. His track The Message was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame this year - making Flash the first DJ and hip hop artist ever to be inducted to both the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame and the Grammy Hall Of Fame.

The show is part of the London 2012 Festival and "aims to push the boundaries of conventional programming and offer audiences a totally new party experience".

On the same night, The Wire and Luther star Idris Elba will count down the defining moments of this great cultural phenomenon in a two-hour film, How Clubbing Changed the World.

Elba is also hoping for glory at the Emmy Awards. Here are some other Brit Emmy contenders...

Director Danny Boyle was the mastermind behind the London Olympic Opening Ceremony

Amazon.co.uk has also reported a 900% uplift in sale of Boyle's Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire during the same period.

“Danny Boyle was the first winner of this Olympics with his best-loved movies experiencing a surge in sales,” said John Boumphrey, Music, DVD and MP3 Director at Amazon.co.uk Ltd.

“From '90s cult classic Trainspotting through to the award-winning Slumdog Millionaire, the increase in orders of the British director’s films is a clear indication that people loved the spectacle he created for London 2012.”

The appearance of Mr Bean on the keyboard, while the orchestra played the Chariots of Fire soundtrack, helped see crowd favourite Rowan Atkinson's films rise in sales, too.

Mr Bean's Movie Box Set (The Ultimate Disaster Movie/Mr Bean's Holiday) saw a 311% uplift, and after playing Isambard Kingdom Brunel in the opening sequence, Sir Kenneth Branagh’s Much Ado About Nothing saw a 300% increase.

Other films which had clips featured in the celebrations also saw an uplift – Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was up 250% and Chariots of Fire up 138%.

The Sun claims he has been given the job of trying to create the first winner from the Overs category since Steve Brookstein won the first series in 2004.

Charlie Sheen has declared he is no longer "insane".

The former Two And A Half Men Star, who was fired from the show in 2011 and replaced by Ashton Kutcher, spoke out about his mental health at the summer meeting of the TV Critics Association.

Becoming fed up with being asked questions about his widely-reported private life around the time of his firing, he told reporters: "Life's different now. I'm not insane any more."

Sheen says he is back on track

When asked how his life was different now, compared to his 2011 meltdown, Sheen said: "It was a crazy time, like a dream I couldn't wake up from or a train I couldn't get off, except I was the conductor. It's something that could never happen again. I learned a lot, I learned, 'Stick to what you know.' I learned, 'Don't go on a one man show with no act' ... [Laughs.] Now that I'm not insane anymore, I'm accountable, most of the time."

Sheen now stars in Anger Management, where he plays anger-management therapist Charlie Good-son.

He told reporters at the meeting that Anger Management is poised to get an order for 90 more episodes - and his father Martin Sheen is set to become a regular cast member.

The FX cable TV comedy is half way through its initial 10-episode run, and Sheen joked: "I don't think 90's gonna be enough."

'Fifty Shades Of Grey': Angelina Jolie 'Would Love A Part' In The Film, Say Reports

Angelina Jolie would reportedly 'love a part' in the film adaptation of E L James' Fifty Shades Of Grey.

The Oscar-winning actress has been reading the "mummy porn" novel on set of her latest film Maleficent and now wants a part, according to The Mirror.

A source reportedly told them: "She knows the film is bound to be a huge hit."

angelina jolie
Is Angelina Jolie your idea of Anastasia Steele?

The Twilight-inspired novel, written by British author James, follows a young college student as she embarks on a BDSM relationship with an older businessman.

Jolie being cast as the leading lady Anastasia Steele - who's described as pale, with long dark hair and blue eyes too big for her face - is highly unlikely, partly because she's 37-years-old (not 'young' college student age) and also because Steele is a virgin at the beginning of the story.

More likely names that have been thrown into the ring include younger actresses with more innocent reputations, such as Lilly Collins, Emma Watson, Alexis Bledel, Nina Dobrev, Kristen Stewart, Rachel McAdams, Emilia Clarke, Amanda Seyfried and Ashley Greene.

The International Business Times recently reported that Harry Potter actress Watson is "is one of the prime choices for the role".

Producers of The Social Network, Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti, will bring the film to screen.

It was also recently rumoured Jolie would be directing the film. Deadline.com journalist Mike Fleming wrote while breaking the news of Jolie's potential involvement: "I've heard rumors about the possibility of Angelilna Jolie having a conversation or two about directing it." However, her reps said that no discussions occurred.

As for Ana's seducer Christian Grey, the fictional heart throb was recently imagined in the flesh with the help of image-generating software and descriptions from women who have read the book, while Chris Pine and True Blood's Alexander Skarsgård have been linked to the screen adaptation.

The epic Doctor Who series seven trailer has arrived, showing the Doctor and his companion Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) take on thousands of Daleks, the Weeping Angels and... dinosaurs.

On Tuesday the BBC also released a promo shot for the series showing the Doctor with a cut on his head, while carrying his redheaded companion to safety.

The picture features multiple models of the Dalek, including variations from the 1960s and '70s, plus the Special Weapons Dalek from 1988.

Smith recently told how Gillan pinched the Doctor's bottom as they filmed her final scenes in the sci-fi show. Amy Pond is being written out in a "heartbreaking" storyline. Both Amy and Rory (Arthur Darvill) will bow out of the show in an adventure which will feature the Weeping Angels.

Smith said: "We had a hug and Karen fondled me. I called her Fondling Bottom Gillan."

Speaking at the Comic-Con convention in San Diego, California, Gillan added: "I was in bits. I didn't want to go. There were tears, a lot of tears. But it is the best exit ever."

Former Emmerdale actress Jenna-Louise Coleman will replace Gillan as the Doctor's new assistant halfway through the new series.

The actress set to play Viper in the flick is yet to be confirmed, although it's widely reported that the physical role has been handed to Russian actress Svetlana Khodchenkova after Jessica Biel dropped out.

The film will be directed by Walk The Line director James Mangold and is scheduled for release in summer 2013.

Jackman has been keeping fans updated with the film's progress on his Twitter page. This week he told his Twitter followers: "We're on day 1 of shooting. Wolverine is back…feel so pumped about this one……never felt so ready!!!! will keep y'all posted!!!"

He also shared a picture of the high-protein chicken breast and asparagus meal he was eating as part of his efforts to get his famously buff body back in shape for the film.

He accompanied it with the words: "And you know what that means.... the wolverine diet!! this was meal 2 at 9am this morning."

London Olympics: 5 Team GB Members Who Deserve A Film And The Actors Who Should Play Them

$

Since the London 2012 Olympics have begun, a whole new set of 'celebrities' have emerged. In what may come as a giant relief to people suffering with TOWIE-fatigue, it seems we are no longer are we talking about their latest intrigues, nor are we seemingly THAT bothered about the demise of the Twilight romance.

Instead, in Britain, we are screaming at our televisions, frantically searching for Games tickets and sharing stories of our Team GB athletes' incredible achievements.

The Olympics are making great viewing and with that, new stars are emerging.

Many members of the GB Team are privately educated with stable, supportive families providing them with all the resources and deep pockets they need to become world champions.

But the ones that audiences have taken most to their hearts are, arguably, those stand-out individuals who have overcome huge personal obstacles, challenges and 'hurdles' to get to the Games.

Here are just some of the incredible people performing on behalf of Great Britain at the London Olympics who deserve their very own Chariots Of Fire or Billy Elliot-style biopic, along with some of the screen names best-placed to play them...

Athlete: Tom Daley
Actor: Penn Badgley or Zac Efron
Genre: Coming of age drama

Tom Daley's boyish good looks and tiny trunks are spoken about almost as much as his fantastic diving. Everyone is rooting for the superstar of Team GB, who has a fan following beyond almost any other athlete in the squad.

It's the 18-year-old's second Olympic appearance, having competed in Beijing four years ago. But this time there is a big difference, with Daley having to work through tragedy after his father Robert died of a brain tumour at the age of 40 in May last year.

tom daley

The boy wonder has grown up in the unforgiving public glare, been bullied at school - and now on Twitter - criticised for supposed under-achievement and not working hard enough and he has endured it all with grace and dignity.

Athlete: Mary King
Actress: Emma Thompson or Lindsay Duncan
Genre: Thriller (a bit like 127 Hours)

Horseriding Mary King, a 51-year-old ex-chalet girl and the oldest member of Team GB, has just bagged a silver medal after four exhausting days during which her brilliant performance made a gold seem within snatching distance.

Eleven years ago she lay in a field, alone and with a broken neck.

mary king

A horse she was training had bucked her off and as she lay in that field she realised something was very wrong. "I had complete body movement and went to get up but I couldn’t. I couldn’t lift my head off the ground,” she told The Express.

She managed to walk the quarter-mile to the stables but in hospital her broken neck was misdiagnosed as whiplash. Three days later and back on a horse she felt as if her head was loose. It was only then that a consultant confirmed the break.

Athlete: Bradley Wiggins
Actor: Rhys Ifans, at a push Paul Weller
Genre: Road movie

Adding to his recent Tour de France victory, Wiggins and his famous sideburns stormed through the streets to victory in the men's Olympic time trial this week. Scoring his seventh Olympic medal, Wiggins has become Britain's most decorated Olympian ever, overtaking Sir Steve Redgrave's previous record (with Sir Chris Hoy now beating him on golds).

If these remarkable achievements in the past two weeks aren't enough to warrant a film, a glimpse back at his life story reveals the pain he has overcome...

bradley wiggins

Wiggins went to a Church of England school in Kilburn, which does not count a velodrome among its PE facilities. Like many children in London, he had to trek across the capital to train. But what is most heartbreaking is the story of his relationship with his father.

His father, Gary, an Australian who made a living as a cyclist on the European tour, had already abandoned one young family in Australia when he walked out on his second wife and his son, Bradley, then aged two.

His father only got back in touch after a 20-year-old Bradley won a bronze medal at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. He persuaded him to come to the cycling club where he hung out; he wanted to show off his son and enter him in a race. But when Bradley, tired from the Olympics, failed to perform, Gary accused him of being a failure and they never spoke again. When Gary died in mysterious circumstances in a New South Wales street at the age of 55 in 2008, Bradley stayed away from the funeral.

Athlete: Victoria Pendleton
Actress: Rachel Weisz or Kate Beckinsale
Genre: Romance

There are high hopes for cycling's golden girl Victoria Pendleton at the London 2012 Olympics but sprint times are not the only pressure the poster girl has had to contend with in the lead-up to the Games.

Pendleton made the troublesome error of falling in love, at a time when her coaches wanted her mind only on training. Plus... it's an unwritten rule in professional sport that coaches do not become involved with their athletes because of the risk it will undermine team spirit. The man she fell for? Her coach Scott Gardner.

victoria pendleton

Pendleton has described how, when clutching the coveted gold medal at the 2008 Games, all she felt was numbness, as her squad had just reacted angrily to the news of their affair.

Gardner, an Australian sports scientist, had to switch to the Team GB swimming team and Pendleton spent years isolated from her fellow cyclists who made plain their sense of betrayal. In a recent BBC documentary she said: "‘Everyone was so angry that Scott and I had fallen in love. It was so unprofessional – we were a disgrace and had betrayed everybody."

The pair are now engaged and Pendleton is once again at one with her squad with Gardner also back in their good books - like all good romances, a fairytale ending could well be in sight.

Athlete: Gemma Gibbons
Actress: Kate Winslet or Michelle Williams
Genre: Gritty British drama

Unlike many athletes at the Games, Gibbons' parents were not in the stands to watch her succeed as she exceeded all expectations by securing a judo silver medal for Great Britain this week.

Her father walked out before she was born, and when she was 17, her mother - who had brought her up as a single parent in a council flat, taking her to her first judo class at the age of six - died of leukaemia.

gemma gibbons

Gibbons was left to fend for herself, and had to take on a part-time job to pay the rent. She has revealed how the chance to compete at a home Games in her native city spurred her on to continue in the sport that she loved and reach elite level.

The happy ending? Britain’s first Olympic judo medal since the Sydney Games 12 years ago and a big congratulations by David Cameron.

The 25-year-old Londoner, overcome by emotion, knelt on the floor and held her face in her hands, before dedicating her victory to her mother. She mouthed to the heavens: “I love you mum," as the nation looked on proudly.

Morrissey Blasts The Olympics: Singer Compares Spirit To Nazi Germany And Criticises Coverage Of 'Dazzling Royals'

As more than 20 million viewers tuned in to the BBC to watch Usain Bolt win the 100 metre final Sunday night, you can be certain that one Northern man wasn't watching the celebrations...

Former Smiths frontman Morrissey has made his views on the Olympics very clear in a post on his fan site True To You, including comparing the current spirit around Britain and the Games to that of Nazi Germany.

He also complained about the royals being given too much media coverage at the Olympics and the "foul patriotism" that has taken over England.

morrissey

In a statement on his website, he said:

I am unable to watch the Olympics due to the blustering jingoism that drenches the event. Has England ever been quite so foul with patriotism? The "dazzling royals" have, quite naturally, hi-jacked the Olympics for their own empirical needs, and no oppositional voice is allowed in the free press. It is lethal to witness.

As London is suddenly promoted as a super-wealth brand, the England outside London shivers beneath cutbacks, tight circumstances and economic disasters. Meanwhile the British media present 24-hour coverage of the 'dazzling royals', laughing as they lavishly spend, as if such coverage is certain to make British society feel fully whole. In 2012, the British public is evidently assumed to be undersized pigmies, scarcely able to formulate thought.

As I recently drove through Greece I noticed repeated graffiti seemingly everywhere on every available wall. In large blue letters it said WAKE UP WAKE UP. It could almost have been written with the British public in mind, because although the spirit of 1939 Germany now pervades throughout media-brand Britain, the 2013 grotesque inevitability of Lord and Lady Beckham (with Sir Jamie Horrible close at heel) is, believe me, a fate worse than life. WAKE UP WAKE UP.

His comments are hardly out of character. He recently blasted Sir Paul McCartney for accepting a knighthood from HM The Queen.

The famously anti-royal rocker is adamant he would turn down any offer of an official honour from the British Establishment, insisting that such awards are intended to make rebellious celebrities "trot into line".

However, she was labelled the "Queen of England" to cheers from the audience by frontman Ian Brown - who also introduced gold medal-winning cyclist Bradley Wiggins as the "King of England", before he and his band broke into a happily-received set.

Before taking to the stage just before midnight, Brown joked: "Sorry we’re late, we were having a shoot-out backstage!"

The band played an 11-song, hit-filled set which included I Wanna Be Adored, Fools Gold, This Is The One, She Bangs The Drums and the closing I Am The Resurrection.

Example has revealed how he was left speechless on meeting Olympic gold medallist Jessica Ennis on Monday night.

Talking to Huffington Post UK at an Olympics party thrown by sponsors Adidas, the Kickstarts singer said: "My favourite moment of the Olympics has been meeting Jessica Ennis and wearing her gold medal."

Obviously chuffed with meeting the heptathlete, he took out his phone to show us a picture he'd taken of them together and added: "I didn't know what to say. I'm usually so confident around women and in your face.

"It was the first time in five or six years where I've been really, really shy and didn't know what to do.

"Even when I met her [points at girlfriend] and she's gorgeous, I was like 'yeah how you doing'... I didn't know what to say to Jess, I was like 'so what have you eaten today?'

"I would swap all of my top tens and top 40s for one gold medal - you've got to work towards that for your whole life."

Meeting the pretty athlete even trumped watching the 100-metre final for Example, who boasted: "Up until yesterday, I would have said the 100 metres. I went to the final with Adidas. I was going to sell my tickets. Apparently I could have got four grand for four tickets next to each other because my tickets were in front of the finishing line next to Jamie Oliver."

Unfortunately for Example, his music commitments have stopped him watching any more sport: "They've said to me 'you can come to any event you want' but I've been touring nonstop I've been on a flight, like, every day."

Gerard Butler has ditched his fake American accent in his latest film Playing For Keeps.

The trailer shows Butler take up his native Scottish voice as he plays a former Celtic footballer named George Dryer who's trying to redeem himself with his son.

From the director of The Pursuit of Happyness, Gabriele Mucino, the romantic comedy also stars Jessica Biel as his son's mother, Uma Thurman, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Dennis Quaid.

Looking for a way to rebuild his relationship with his son, George gets roped into coaching the boy’s football team but acting like an adult proves challenging when there are attractive "soccer moms" who pursue him at every turn.

Back in 2009 Butler said he was worried about losing his Scottish accent. He told Hollyscoop: "I've spent a year and a half now playing roles as an American and I'm not comfortable enough doing those accents only when we film, so I have to keep it up all the time. I really hate myself for doing that."

The film is set for release in cinemas 1 February 2013.
