Tonight's TV Pick: Tuesday 9 - 'The Mystery Of Edwin Drood'

The Mystery of Edwin Drood - 9pm, BBC2

Continuing the national obsession with all things Dickensian at the moment - coinciding with the 200th anniversary of the great novelist's birth - the BBC brings his final, unfinished novel about the tale of a missing boy and an opium-addicted choir master to our screens tonight, in the first of a two-parter (concluding tomorrow).

The tale of an orphaned boy and an opium-addicted master, the story was only half-written when its famous author died on June 9 1870. After a full day of working on Drood, and exactly halfway through the 12 planned monthly instalments of his novel, Dickens suffered a massive stroke... so this version is how screenwriter Gwyneth Hughes imagines it would have concluded.

Choirmaster John Jasper's unecclesiastical dreams of killing his beloved nephew Edwin Drood and stealing his fiancée Rosa Bud are brought to life in vivid, hallucinogenic fashion, in contrast with the brooding shadows of this dark adaptation.

In a blog on the BBC's website, the director Diarmuid Lawrence said he spent weeks with the writer and exec producer in "intense discussions about how to bring this exciting and challenging work to the screen, not necessarily as Dickens would have done - because who knows what he intended - but in a way that remains true to most of what he did write."

Here are some pics of Edwin Drood and Co - usual pale cheekbone rules apply:

The Only Way Is Essex: Maria Fowler And Harry Derbidge Leave The Show (VIDEO)

The Only Way Is Essex is becoming an ever-more deserted stomping ground, with stars Maria Fowler and Harry Derbidge both confirming they are to leave the ITV2 reality show.

Derbridge, who first coined the famous TOWIE phrase "shurrrrup", wrote on his Twitter page: "Hiya! I really did not want you to all find out so soon but its out there, I am not in TOWIE anymore as I am moving onto different things."

A tweet from fellow TOWIE star James Argent suggests Derbridge wants a West End role, he said: "Emotional call with close mate @MrHarryDerbidge and his Mum Aunty Karen! You will be in the west end dancing 100%! Originals, never forget!!"

Fowler, whose involvement in the show had been cast into doubt following allegations that she worked as an escort, also tweeted about her exit. She wrote: "I would like to be the first to announce... After a rollercoaster year and after meeting with producers today we have decided that my time on TOWIE has come to an end (sic)."

Amy Childs was the first TOWIE star to leave the Essex based show behind after appearing on Celebrity Big Brother. Mark Wright then departed to take on the I'm A Celebrity jungle challenge, and Kirk Norcross recently quit to follow in Childs' footsteps in the CBB house. This lot may have been the first to leave the BAFTA-winning Essex show for a taste of more lucrative reality, but it doesn't look like they'll be the last...

Take Me Out Scandals Continue With 'Wild Sex Party'

The days of Take Me Out being compared to more innocent dating shows such as Cilla's Blind Date are long gone, after contestants in the latest series continue to make the papers for their promiscuous off-screen antics.

Up to 90 contestants from the ITV show, hosted by Paddy McGuiness are said to have taken part in a "a wild sex and booze party at a &pound4.5million mansion" last weekend.

The Sun reports the party to celebrate the new series "turned into a frantic sex and booze tear-up" - and has the pictures to prove it.

Only yesterday we reported that contestant Aaron Withers worked as a &pound50-an-hour male escort. And today, his 'lucky' date from the show, Wen-Jing Mo, has claimed he "manipulated her into bed".

After Withers' escort past involving a violent incident was revealed, Mo told the Daily Mirror: "I would definitely not have slept with him if I'd known he had punched a woman. He definitely lied just to get into bed with me. I'm 100% sure.

"He manipulated me just to have sex with him. He manipulated this whole situation. Not only has he made a fool out of me, he's got me cut out of the show - so I'm really p**sed off."

Take Me Out became a hit last year, after Paddy's "no likey, no lighty" caught on amongst viewers. The attitude of people who volunteer themselves to be picked out from a line-up of contestants on prime-time TV for their looks, and usually little else, has always been questionable, but now events appear a distinctly more unseemly turn.

A source told The Sun: "Take Me Out is known for attracting 'up for it' young people." However, a spokesperson for TalkbackTHAMES added: "We will review procedures."

SLIDESHOW: Meet some of the contestants from the show below. These girls are not necessarily the party-goers mentioned above.

People's Choice Awards: Robert Pattinson Debuts Shaved Head

Twilight star Robert Pattinson has said a proper goodbye to his days as teen heartthrob Edward Cullen by shaving off his trademark hair.

The British actor took to the stage at the People's Choice Awards in Los Angeles last night, collecting his award for Favourite Drama Movie for Water For Elephants, with a distinct lack of vampish-hair.

Now the final Twilight flick is in the can, Pattinson seems to have followed in the footsteps of Matt Damon in transforming his look by shaving his head.

However, although his floppy hair has gone, Pattinson's boyish charm remains, and he was pictured laughing with Golden Girls star Betty White.

Water For Elephants, which Pattinson starred in alongside Reese Witherspoon, beat The Adjustment Bureau, The Help, Limitless and Moneyball to land the coveted gong.

Accepting the Award, R-Patz said: "When I was doing this movie, I was having so much fun doing it that I was saying to everyone I didn't even care if anyone saw it.

"But now that people have seen it and they're giving awards for it, I'm even more thankful for the whole experience, so thank you guys very much."

Fans reacted to Pattinson's haircut on Twitter, with messages appearing to be mainly positive. One said:

Sir Anthony Hopkins 'Composer': Actor Debuts First Album - 5 Actors Who've Turned To Music

$

Sir Anthony Hopkins has debuted the fruits of his musical labour, recorded from the time he joined the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra as a composer.

The Silence Of The Lambs actor has spent years starring on the silver screen - but now, at the age of 74, he is about to release his first album.

Sir Anthony Hopkins Composer, featuring his original work performed by the Orchestra, is released on 16 January, but nine tracks from the album can be heard on The Telegraph's website now.

Hopkins isn't the first actor to turn to music, here are five other male actors-turned-musicians - with varying degrees of success...

Steve Martin

Comedic actor Martin released platinum-selling albums off the back of his appearances in the seventies on US shows such as Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show. And the track Excuse Me on his first album, Let's Get Small, helped establish a national catch-phrase.

William Shatner

Captain James T Kirk enjoyed enduring fame and fortune with Star Trek but also started a musical career with the spoken-word album in 1968, The Transformed Man, delivering exaggerated, interpretive recitations of Mr. Tambourine Man and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. He released a well-received second studio album in 2004 called Has Been, and a third, Seeking Major Tom, was released last year.

Hugh Laurie

The House star holds the coveted title as the highest-paid actor in a drama series in the history of US television, and has even managed to squeeze his own musical performances into episodes of the hit show. In 2011 Laurie was the subject of the ITV series Perspectives, which explained his love for the music of New Orleans and saw him play music, from his album Let Them Talk, at studios and live venues in the city.

Robert Pattinson

Twilight heartthrob R-Patz plays the guitar and piano and has proved he's more than just a popular vampire by singing on two songs on the Twilight soundtrack. Pattinson once called music his "back-up plan if acting fails" and in 2010 he was awarded the award of Hollywood's Most Influential Top Unexpected Musicians.

Bruce Willis

Mr Die Hard flexed his vocal muscles in the late 1980s, enjoying moderate success with pop-blues album The Return of Bruno. Follow-up recordings were not as successful, though Willis has returned to the recording studio several times. His most recent album, Classic Bruce Willis: The Universal Masters Collection, was released in 2001.

Brits: Adele To Make Comeback Performance At 2012 Awards

Adele stole the show with her breathtaking performance of Someone Like You at the 2011 Brit Awards. Now she's set to return to the stage - for hopefully another spectacular performance at the 2012 Brits.

The Rolling In The Deep singer will make her highly-anticipated comeback, after undergoing throat surgery and having to cancel tour dates in 2011, at the Brit Awards on 21 February.

Her performance at last year's Awards was universally praised and saw sales of her album 21 sky-rocket by a stunning 890 per cent on Amazon.co.uk less than an hour after she left the stage, where 4.9m watched the awards on TV and thousands more tuned in to relive her performance online.

It was also announced today that she's been nominated for three Awards: Best Female Solo Artist, British Single for Someone Like You, and the Mastercard British Album of the Year for her album 21.

Adele was last nominated for three Brits in 2009 after the release of her debut album 19, which saw her receive nods for Best British Female, Best British Single and Best British Breakthrough Act. However, she returned home empty-handed.

Fans of the Grammy Award winner, who has recently made the headlines for bagging a new man, have been eager to see her return to the stage - so much so that a recent TV recording of her performance at the Royal Albert Hall, which aired on BBC1 on New Year's Day, saw sales of 21 boost so high that it regained its place at the top of the UK album charts, exactly one year after its release.

The question now is - what should Adele pick to sing at the Awards? Other artists confirmed to perform on the night are Blur, Coldplay, Bruno Mars, Florence and the Machine, Ed Sheeran and Noel Gallagher High Flying Birds. Let us know what you'd like to hear below...

Brit Nominations: Blur To Reform And Receive Outstanding Contribution To Music Award

Blur are to be honoured for their many successful years in the music industry with the Outstanding Contribution to Music gong at the 2012 Brit Awards.

The nineties rock band, made up of Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree, are also set to reform for a special Brits performance on the night.

The band first returned to the music scene in 2009 after a six-year hiatus to headline a series of festivals and now they will reform once again to close the show after they pick up the coveted award. Previous winners of the prize include Paul McCartney, U2, Queen and the Who.

The Britpop group first formed in 1989 and last won Brit Awards in 1995 for Best Band, Best Album (Parklife), and Best Single (Parklife).

READ: The Brit Award nominations in full.

Bassist Alex James recently told XFM radio station: "We're going to play, which is brilliant, it's like putting the Blues Brothers back together."

When asked about the prospect of another Blur tour, he added: "Well, let's hope - heritage year next year. (Would) be good, wouldn't it?"

Meanwhile, guitarist Graham Coxon told NME magazine: "It should be a laugh playing the old songs again."

Blur aren't the only act to receive notification of an Award at this year's Brits - Emeli Sande was also recently named the winner of the 2012 Critics' Choice award.

Other artists confirmed to perform on the night are Adele, Coldplay, Bruno Mars, Florence and the Machine, Ed Sheeran and Noel Gallagher High Flying Birds.

The Brit Awards will take place on 21st February at London's O2 Arena.

Brit Nominations: Rihanna Scoops Another Nod For Best International Female Artist - Can Her Credibility Be Restored?

$

Rihanna's attitude may have been called into question this year due to her increasingly salacious lyrics, but that hasn't stopped her being nominated for another Brit Award.

Last year the Bajan singer took home the Brit for Best International Female Artist and this year, once again, she has been nominated for the coveted prize.

However, she faces tough competition from mega-hit-maker Beyonce, whose latest album 4 showcased her powerhouse balladry, and award-hoarder Lady Gaga who recently scooped Best Female at the MTV Europe Music Awards. Bjork and Canadian singer Feist are also in the running.

Rihanna's latest album Talk That Talk received harsh reviews from critics, who lamented her overuse of sexual lyrics.

BBC Music said it had "drearily sexual lyricism" and "over showy but shallow production". They claimed: "She's trapped between playing the characters of a ruthless dominatrix and a docile sort willing to be putty in a boy's hands."

The Guardian said it "lacks the progression" of her previous album Rated R, "or the bombast of Loud" and Pitchfork complained: "For a record so preoccupied with passion and pleasure, most of Talk That Talk feels unsuitably robotic."

It's not just her music that's been criticised in the past year. Her performances and actions have been branded "lewd" and "offensive" on a weekly basis. She's upset critics by posing with cigarettes, by wearing as little as she can on tour and her video for We Found Love, a souped-up dysfunctional love-fest, has been ruled unsuitable for France's daytime television.

The truly defining moment of a headline-making year in Rihanna's raunchiness has to be the time the 23-year-old switched from a flannel-checked shirt into a stars-and-stripes bikini, a red bra, a mesh black top, and finally went topless in an Irish farmer's field, causing him to climb off his tractor to protest.

Despite all this, she has pipped other international artists including the poptastic Katy Perry to a Brit Award nomination. Is her musical credibility about to be restored?

One Direction could be in line for their first Brit Award, after they were nominated for Best British Single.

Former X Factor contestants Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson took the charts by storm with their debut single, What Makes You Beautiful, in September.

The upbeat tune went straight to number one and notched up the highest first-week sales of 2011, shifting 153,000 copies record in seven days.

Their hard work and adoring fans have now been rewarded with a Brit nomination, based on commercial radio airplay and sales. Music fans will get the chance to vote for who takes home the gong at the ceremony on 21 February.

The other singles in the running are as follows:

Adele - Someone Like You
Ed Sheeran - The A Team
Example - Changed The Way You Kiss Me
Jessie J featuring VOB - Price Tag
JLS featuring Dev - She Makes Me Wanna
Military Wise/Gareth Malone - Wherever You Are
Olly Murs featuring Rizzelkicks - Heart Skips A Beat
Pixie Lott - All About Tonight
The Wanted - Glad you Came

This Week In Entertainment: Adele, Katy Perry, Jeremy Clarkson, Madonna, Avatar 2

This week the world of entertainment was launched head-first into awards season and, by Jove, haven't we noticed?

Ceremonies kicked off with Teenage Dream singer Katy Perry scooping FIVE People's Choice Awards on Wednesday.

Poptastic Perry was noticeably absent from the Los Angeles event - her well-publicised marriage split from Russell Brand meant she didn't fancy getting her glad rags on, but that didn't stop her pulling in the prizes.

Brit Awards fever also took hold, as the highly-anticipated nominations were announced with some surprising results.

Even more welcome than the list of nods was news that Adele will be back on stage for the February ceremony, leaving us holding out to hear how she can possible top last year's show-stealer. She picked up three nominations to boot, however, it was the brightly-haired Ed Sheeran who picked up the most nods with four. Including British Album of the Year, for which he'll go head to head with the Someone Like You singer.

Hollywood was agape at the news Avatar 2 has been delayed until 2016, leaving fans of the 3D fantasy adventure disappointed. Director James Cameron had initially spoken of his hopes to release the sequel in December 2014.

However, another film arrived in style in London this week, as Madonna joined W.E. stars Andrea Riseborough and James D'Arcy for the premiere of her directorial debut. The 53-year-old shined on the red carpet as she told reporters: "This movie shows that there is no such thing as perfect love."

And finally, it turned out obnoxious Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson had managed to upset a whole nation with his comments on the 2011 Christmas Top Gear Special, filmed in India, where he poked fun at the country's stereotype, driving a Jaguar customised with a loo-seat.

The Indian High Commission in London formally complained to the BBC about the nature of the programme, saying it had been misled, while Clarkson observers once again commented on his ability to cause offence in his sleep.

Celebrity Big Brother: Denise Welch Kicks Michael Madsen Out Of Bed

Relations on Celebrity Big Brother have broken down with soap star Denise Welch tearing into Reservoir Dogs actor Michael Madsen.

The Loose Women panelist told the Hollywood actor to "f*** off" before bursting into tears and crying herself to sleep.

Madsen, who was sitting on Welch's bed, was kicked out as he tried to explain about his long trips to the diary room.

The Coronation Street star said to him: "Why do you think Big Brother is so much more interesting than us?"

The confused Kill Bill actor tried to calm her down and said: "Look honey..." but Denise shouted: "F*** you arsehole. F*** you. F*** off!"

Former Celebrity Big Brother housemate Andrew Stone has voiced his concern over Welch's behaviour. He told the Daily Star: "Alcohol is a crutch for her.

"There is no TV. No phone. It's just you and them and booze helps. She is struggling. Being in there is hard."

The Celebrity Big Brother house is no stranger to quirky behaviour - TV and radio presenter Vanessa Feltz stunned viewers when she scribbled words such as "incarcerated, diffident, disparate, frustrated" on the dining room table with a piece of chalk back in 2001.

Denise, who has been tearful in the house, previously gave up booze and even attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

Before entering the house, she said: "I stopped drinking completely but I chose to start drinking again.

"I didn't fall off the wagon, I stepped off it. I drink at parties. I drink at awards dos.

"I drink when I am out with my mates and that's when you get all the pap snaps of drunk Denise."

After the great success of the current series, Sherlock will be returning to the nation's screens again.

As the BBC One drama's second series drew to its climax on Sunday night and just as fans began to mourn the end of another spectacular show, the programme's creators announced that it will be back.

Steven Moffat, the Doctor Who writer who's famously a fan of keeping viewers guessing, waited until the last moment to break the news - despite the third series being commissioned months ago.

READ: Our review of episode three.

He previously told BBC News there was "no guarantee we'll be bringing him back", but yesterday he wrote on Twitter:

Moffat's Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss then tweeted:

An average audience of 7.9m tuned in to watch his modern take on Arthur Conan Doyle's The Reichenbach Fall last night, which saw Sherlock (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) fake his own death.

Despite the good news that Sherlock will return, when that will be is still a mystery. It is likely to be next year at the earliest, as its stars - Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman - are both currently involved in the filming of major blockbuster films.

Sharp-suited Brits Benedict Cumberbatch and Damian Lewis strutted up the red carpet in style at the Golden Globes last night.

Sherlock star Cumberbatch, who's an eligible singleton again after recently splitting from girlfriend Anna Jones, turned up in a black suit to help secure his unlikely heartthrob status, while fans on this side of the pond settled down to watch the final episode of Sherlock series two.

He was joined by Homeland actor Damian Lewis in Los Angeles, where the pair attended a celebrity reception at the Writers Room for a suit fitting by British designer Nick Hart ahead of the awards ceremony.

The Wire star Dominic West also had his outfit supplied by the tailor, founder of label Spencer Hart, as they prepared for the glare of hundreds of cameras.

Unfortunately Lewis missed out on the Lead Actor in a TV drama award to Kelsey Grammar for his dark portrayal of Chicago's Mayor in Boss.

Cumberbatch attended the awards as part of the cast of the Steven Spielberg epic, War Horse, which was nominated for Best Motion picture. However, the film starring Jeremy Irvine, lost out to George Clooney's The Descendants.

The magazine has just announced the winner of their 'Britain's Coolest Man' poll, and the lucky man has staved off competition from Dr Who actor Matt Smith, Prince Harry, Robbie Savage and musician Noel Gallagher to take the accolade.

Last year it was Jimmy Carr who Zoo's readers wanted to emulate - but who's top dog this year? Find out in the slideshow below...

Here Bateman talks exclusively about working with kids, the funniest scene in the film and how he used to be 'that guy' in his twenties.

Downton Abbey could be on its way to the silver screen, if a report in The Sun is to be believed.

The paper claims the ITV1 period-drama's writer Julian Fellowes was "virtually mobbed" during a Golden Globes after-party in Hollywood.

Downton Abbey continued its transatlantic sweep on Sunday, with a Golden Globe for Best TV Drama, Mini-Series or Motion Picture, at the Awards, and afterwards all anyone wanted to talk about was reportedly the prospect of bringing the series to Hollywood for a film.

A source told the paper: "They were all chatting about how much of a success the film version would be.

"Julian was explaining he would have to give the idea a lot of thought and that lots of people have already asked him about film rights."

Whether Downton's British charm could translate successfully into a Hollywood hit is surely beyond doubt. Fellowes has already proven his ability to write a feature film with the Oscar-winning screenplay of Gosford Park, and watching a feature-length version of Downton would make a nice break from being interrupted by all the ads on TV.

But before Fellowes signs any deals with his golden pen, he might like to remember these popular TV shows that were turned into films - with varying levels of success:

Sex and the City

The stiletto-heeled New York adventures of Carrie Bradshaw and co. were a far cry from the TV chickflick tat women are often subjected to. It was about four smart women, three of whom had no interest in getting married, and over the years it continued to build funny, warm and wise stories based around their enduring friendship. However, when Hollywood attempted to bring it to the silver screen, the films were unable to avoid the cliches the TV series had so cleverly managed to steer between, and they ended up confirming all the worst assumptions made about the show and its audience. That's not to say it didn't storm the Box Office, loyal fans helped make the first film Box Office number one in both the US and the UK and it ended pulling in a lifetime UK total of £26.5m in ticket sales. The sequel did not fare as well, with either critics or cinema-goers, being derided for classism, bizarrely racism and, worst of all, cliche.

The lesson: Stick to the formula that made your show successful in the first place.

The Inbetweeners

The unpredicted tally of cinema receipts for The Inbetweeners Movie was one of last year's great film success stories. The story was a crude, simple tale of what happened when the stars of E4 sitcom The Inbetweeners, Blake Harrison, Joe Thomas, James Buckley and Simon Bird prepared for adult life, by going on a lads' holiday. It should have been swamped and drowned by big summer Hollywood blockbusters, instead, it spent four lucrative weeks at the top of the summer charts, earning itself the title of 'the most successful British comedy in cinema history'.

The lesson: If fans are loyal and the script good, a film can transcend its simple budget and premise with surprising results

Charlie's Angels

Since the seventies it was Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett and Jaclyn Smith who were known as Charlie's Angels, with a dutiful nod to Farrah Fawcett and her red swimsuit. But when the story of three beautiful female detectives, defending truth, justice and the American way, was remade for cinema in 2000, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu became Charlie's new girls. The big-screen reinterpretation surpassed the original show to become one of the great popcorn films of the last decade.

The lesson: Adaptations can work without the original cast

Are You Being Served

The misadventures of the staff of a department store retail floor was so popular that in 1977 the quintessentially British sitcom was given its own movie. Young Mr. Grace sent the staff - Mrs Slocombe and her don't-leave-home-without Pussy included - on holiday to Costa Plonka, while Grace Brothers closed for redecoration. Unfortunately it was no Inbetweeners success.

The lesson: Don't stray from the original and much-loved location (for which, read SATC2)

Miami Vice

The 1984 TV series starring Don Johnson, Philip Michael Thomas and Saundra Santiago about the adventures of the vice squad detectives of the Miami Police Department won two Golden Globes. When Colin Farrell, Jamie Foxx and Li Gong revisited Vice in film form in 2006 it failed to garner similar critical praise, but fans took it to Box Office number one on its opening weekend.

The lesson: Jamie Foxx can spice anything up, and rolled-up suit sleeves deserve as big a screen as they can get
